Mohsen Kaboli – Surrogate Mother

Mohsen Kaboli, Iran, a psychologist and photographer from the city of Gorgan (Iran), is a member of the International Federation of Photographic Art (FIAP) and the Iranian Photographic Association. He has received national and international awards such as the Gold Medal at the Perspective Festival in India, first place in the Tirgan Project in Toronto, Canada, and finalist at the HIPA Festival in the United Arab Emirates.

“Surrogate mother”
shows how, in Iran, under the 2004 Surrogacy Law, a woman is allowed to carry another person’s embryo and hand it over after birth in exchange for financial compensation. We see Zahra, 29 years old and mother of three, who after her husband’s conviction and facing financial difficulties agreed to become a surrogate mother for a Christian couple, Robert and Arpineh. Arpineh pretends to be pregnant in front of her community with a fake belly, proudly showing off the pregnancy, while Zahra hides her situation. The couple thanks Zahra by saying: “You gave us a life”.

2nd Prize

Antonio Aragón Renuncio – Football for peace

3rd Prize

Ariadna Creus Martínez-Aguado – La Fiesta Brava

Ariadna Creus Martínez-Aguado, Vilassar de Mar, Barcelona (Spain), is a 46-year-old documentary photographer whose work focuses on the relationship humans establish with animals. She has been published in La Directa, Mediapart, Revista 5W, Internazionale, and has exhibited at the Can Basté Forum, FineArt Igualada, and the LASAL Festival. She received grants from the Gijón Photojournalism Festival and the Albarracín Festival, was a finalist for the ZAMPA Photography and Journalism Award, and won the audience award.

“La Fiesta Brava: Popular bullfighting festivals in Spain.” In 2024, 19,254 popular bullfighting events were held in Spain, distinct from traditional bullfighting because the animal is not killed. However, the author, who has documented more than 70 towns, notes that accidents are frequent. The public watches impassively as falls, blows, and fractures occur—a silent violence that normalizes animal suffering as entertainment. Her project invites reflection on this disconnection from animals. Self-funded and developed in a male-dominated environment, the author also denounces the silence surrounding these events.

Young Author Award

Kianoush Saadati – Silent Wings

Kianoush Saadati, Iran, 34, is a visual storyteller who documents the relationship between environmental degradation, social justice, and human resilience, combining narrative intimacy with documentary rigor. He has worked as a documentary photographer and collaborator on Pulitzer Grant-winning projects, and has been published in The Guardian, Der Spiegel, and VG. He received the POY Award of Excellence (2024), fellowships from the Pulitzer Center and NVP Images, and honorable mentions in international contests such as World Water Day, the Kolga Festival, and the Image of the Year Festival.

“Silent Wings” is a project that explores the threat faced by owls in northern Iran, where superstition and habitat loss endanger their survival. A group of women dedicate themselves to rescuing, rehabilitating, and, when possible, returning them to nature. The project, born from the author’s personal experience, documents the cultural myths and the compassion of the women who protect them.

Local Award

Francisco Crespo Alay – Al filo del amor

Francisco Crespo Alay, 69, from S’Agaró (Spain), has been accompanied by photography throughout his life and, although he defines himself as an amateur, he explores with passion and constant learning. His works, sometimes recognized in competitions, reflect a personal gaze built from sensitivity and the observation of the human environment. He offers his images as an invitation to contemplation, silence, and shared experience.

“Al Filo del Amor” is a project consisting of six black-and-white photographs in which, according to the author, the female figure dressed in white is a metaphor for the human—vulnerable and sublime. Each image evokes nostalgia, desire, fulfillment, and waiting. The choice of black and white responds to the will to focus attention on light and essential forms. More than a bride, the figure symbolizes longing and the sacredness of love.
